BLUDSO'S IN COMPTON REVISITED

Did you forget to eat at Bludso's since the first time I posted it? It's been almost 3 years, man. Get your ass on the 710 and head up to try this place out! What man could ever say no to BBQ? If you do not partake in the BBQ, we DEFINITELY are not friends.

So Sasha had a hard day at work and wanted to feast on someone else's cooking, so I did not waste even a moment to call Bludso's for an order of their Texas Platter.

Just off of the 710 freeway on Long Beach Blvd. About 10 minutes from my pad. If you live in Long Beach and live near any freeways, you have no excuse. It really is a quick drive.
Sunday nights are their busiest. Tuesday and Wednesdays are their slowest.
And on this Sunday night it was no exception; line was out the door. As it states on their website, the owner Kevin Bludso's originally a Texas man and learned his BBQ'ing techniques which was passed down from his great great grandfather. I can respect that.
Lets talk about the BBQ. Texas Platter comes with everything except beef ribs. Should've ordered some, but I'll report on that later. All the meats come in one big tin foil, wrapped in BBQ sauce. You would think it would all taste the same because of this but no - each meat still has its unique flavor. Pictured above is the tender pork ribs.
Its meat piled upon meat! and more meat! There's a BBQ chicken thigh behind that rib, I swear! I could eat a whole chicken from this place, which I'm planning to next time.
More pork ribs and there's the hot beef links on the right. My head's sweating just looking at the hot links again... which also makes for an interesting omelet the next morning. Oh, there's a chicken link somewhere in there too.
Pork shoulder, shredded! Dang, I forgot to take a photo of the sliced beef that was also included, which made killer mini sandwiches with the sliced white bread they provide. so did this shredded pork.

I missed a few photos but total, this is what you get in the Texas Sampler:  pork ribs, rib tip, sliced beef, beef links, chicken links and pork shoulder.
You get two big sides with the Texas Platter. I chose mac & cheese.

And the baked beans as well. I like baked beans!
Added a side of greens too. I think all the sides were decent, pretty good. The BBQ is where it's at though.
If you're going to give this place a try, start with the Texas Platter. You'll get 3 maybe 4 full meals out of it for 2.5 people. Yes, it's that big and totally worth it. It's take-out only, no tables or anything.

EAT HERE!

Just call the number below and ask for the Texas Platter!

TA BOM FOOD TRUCK

You know what I get asked a lot? "How did you find out about this place?" Well it's because #1 - I like to fucking eat. #2 - I'm not scared to try anything.

I know a lot of you out there drive right pass a decent hole in the wall and settle for that microwave disgusting Hot Pocket or whatever the fuck at home instead - DO NOT! Check some shit out, give it a shot. You not gonna die.

With that out of the way... onto this choice food truck.
Got turned onto this by Sensei Kevin & Haley Howell one day. It was just a couple blocks away by chance and of course my spider senses were off the charts. Brazilian food truck? friiiick yeah.

I seriously wanted to eat half the menu. No, maybe the whole menu. I seriously wanted to try every single thing they had.

Ta Bom. According to the website, it's Portuguese for "It's Good" and that it was.

Sensei Kevin and Haley went for the Bauru. French roll with tender chunks of steak, mozzarella cheese, sliced tomatos and pickles. Obviously accompanied by fries.

Had my eye on these Coxinhas. I actually ordered a couple then changed my mind and got a Pastel instead. That's ok though, I got hooked up with a bite from Haley-chan! Basically a croquette with cream cheese. Could've sworn it had a pepper inside, you know, like a jalapeno popper.

Here's the Pastel, filled with ground beef and deep fried to delicious magical goodness. The outside was a thin, perfectly crisp pastry. Check out Sensei Kevin in the background, hungry after smashing all his students and making us all tap and some guys even cry. Ok, maybe only me was crying "stop, stop! I no can handle!"

I'm not big on sodas but I'll try one every now and then if its something gourmet or from another country, like this Guarana Antartica. Never seen it before in my life. Tasted kinda like Mountain Dew but much better, I thought. I'd take a can of this again!

So I had a ground beef Pastel and this bad boy, Beef Stragonoff. Yup, I've never had Stragonoff in a while and I didn't feel like eating anything with bread. I thought the Stragonoff was pretty good, I'd get it again for sure. The shoestring potato stick topping was a nice touch too. Pastel and a bowl of this was more than enough for me.
Hope any of you readers get a chance to check out this truck. Yes, very much worth checking out. Get a Pastel no matter what, too. Check out their website for future locations:

HONEY'S KETTLE FRIED CHICKEN - COMPTON

First off, if you scared of going to Compton then you're too much of a pussy and don't deserve some of the treats this town has to offer. Now that I got that out of the way, let's talk about fried chicken.

I fucking love fried chicken. Who doesn't? if you don't, then its very likely that we don't hang out. I like eating fried chicken from every culture I possibly can. Whenever I see it on a menu, I want it (but I can't have it ALL the time of course).

So it was fight night, UFC 156 and I could not stop thinking about eating Jim Dandy Fried Chicken. I was pulling myself into a self created fried chicken vortex.

Since Jahluv commented about Honey's, you know I had to go investigate. Plus Honey's is a little closer to me than Jim Dandy's, its just up the 710 and a couple of blocks off of Alondra.
I picked up CantStayJose, immediately got on the northbound 710 and had him call in an order. Figured they must have some sort of family pack, which they did, so we got ourselves a 10 piece dealio.

Chicken looked fabulous to me. I knew exactly what style of batter it was going to be before I even took my first bite; which is a not too thick but just thick enough for a fried batter loving guy like me. It came with biscuits that were better than your usual fast food joint, especially when you get them warm.
I taxed two pieces in a jiffy while watching Little Nog beat Rashad in the world's most boring fight. They weren't very greasy either, which I was surprised to find out. When I get desperate and eat Popeyes, just two small pieces will make me feel like I ate the fucking devil. My body is quickly telling me 'hey, something wrong here brah'.
It came with cole slaw that was pretty decent. I'd get it again.
And last but not least, our second choice of sides was the gravy & rice. It had a bunch of bits of chicken. This dish came as a big surprise. It was really good. Good enough to feel like we'd been satisfied just with a big bowl of this.

So overall, CantStayJose rates this a 7/10 (FYI, Jose rates Popeye's as a 4/10). Honey's is definitely better than Popeyes, my belly tells me so, and this place is definitely worth the short drive. Although I can't go as far as giving this place the "EAT HERE" validation, I'd say you still owe it to yourself to try it if you're into fried chicken as much as I am.

I got my sight's set on Jim Dandy's next, unless Jahluv's got other recommendations...
