TURMOIL

IT IS RAINING AND THUNDERING
IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

what are we citizens to do?
cars crashing - spinning out of control.
people not showing up for work.
lots of anguish and pain.
my rain gauge has reported an entire .2 inches
oh dear, oh dear!
how will we ever survive

it's time to break out those old Smiths albums.

Pre-1916 MOTORCYCLE CANNONBALL RUN (Part 2)

After shooting photos of all the bikes rolling into the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier, we walked down to check out where they were parked.
All kinds of interesting set-ups.
A whole 'nother realm of vintage bikes.
I found Kimura-san's 1915 Indian.
He had some interesting stories to tell, like a broken crank pin in Oklahoma. Luckily, he said someone flew one in for him.
Everyone did what they had to do:
I talked to Jeff Decker briefly about Kimura-san too, says he was a genius. "Shinya pretty much had the crank out of his bike every night! If I were stranded on a island, I'd like to be with that guy."
So much to look at. It was pretty crowded. Hard to get a shot for you guys. I ain't complaining though.
Check out this rig. It was a video guy riding on the back of this FLH:
It was a good time out there.

Pre-1916 MOTORCYCLE CANNONBALL RUN (Part 1)

Yesterday at the Santa Monica Pier. Got there just 15 minutes before the riders started showing up. Just in time.

It was actually my first time on the pier too.

Seeing so many of these bikes at once was pretty neat.
I mean seeing them at bike shows is one thing.
Seeing a whole grip of them running all together is another.
All these guys were heroes.
hey! it's Lucky!
And I was wondering...
...are these legally not considered motorcycles or something?
Lot of guys running without helmets.

I know that guy.
it's Jeff Decker!
And Kimura-san rolled in right after.
follow his run here.
These "chase trucks" were pretty rad.

hey, it's Mike Tomas!
I'll post more later. Read more about the run.

Kaikado Rikuo

Ok, an intermission from my usual shit about whatevz...

It was 4 years ago, around Aug/Sept or 2006 when I shot these sample photos. I'd usually carry a pocket digital to take some sample shots. I was still shooting film back then, so I got a grip of stuff still on slides. If I ever get a slide scanner, there will be lots of old fun motorcycle and hot rod photos to look at.
So I shot this Rikuo from Kaikado Kustom Service up in Ventura. A nice lady happen to be by, we asked her to get in with a few of the shots.

This feature ended up in an issue of Ol'Skool Rodz.
